Finishing up 2018, and plans for 2019

Hello my dears, I hope that you're all having a lovely time, and that none of you have suffered too badly from the inevitable cheese and wine induced coma that happens during these few days between Christmas and New Year.

I'm sorry that I just disappeared for the last few days of advent.  I just never got the time to update the blog, so I'm going to include those few days at the start of this post.  After that, I'll do more of a normal style of update, with the addition of a section about my plans/resolutions for next year.

Advent

December 21st

- Lindt mini Lindor.

- Bayliss & Harding Jojoba, silk, and almond fragranced bath fizzer.

- Yankee Candle "Snowflake Cookie"

- Kiss makeup black eyeliner pencil.

- Ilchester cheeses Red Leicester.

- T2 Gorgeous Go Go Goa tea.  As this is a black tea, I've saved it until I get back to Sheffield, and back into a more normal routine.

- Homespun Wonders sparkle sock yarn in another perfectly matched colourway to the tea wrapper!  I love this variegated purple and white!

December 22nd

- Lindt mini Lindor.

- Bayliss & Harding scented candle, in that subtle fragrance that I can't identify.

- Yankee Candle "Spiced White Cocoa"

- Kiss makeup gold highlighter.  This is a shade dark for me to use as a highlighter really, but it makes a nice deep gold eyeshadow, or could be used with a light hand as a rose gold blush topper.

- Ilchester cheeses Wensleydale with cranberries.

- T2 Gorgeous Japanese Sencha green tea.  This is a lovely drink, like a lighter version of green tea with jasmine.

- Homespun Wonders merino sock yarn in this stunning turquoise colour.

December 23rd

- Lindt mini Lindor.

- Bayliss & Harding Jojoba, silk, and almond fragranced soap.

- Yankee Candle "Snowflake cookie"

- Kiss makeup silver nail stickers.

- Ilchester cheeses Cheddar cheese.

- T2 Gorgeous Twinkle Berry tea. I haven't got around to trying this one either.

- Homespun Wonders merino sock yarn in a rich, chocolate brown colour.

December 24th

- Lindt chocolate Santa Claus. This was quite a lot of chocolate!

- Bayliss & Harding Sweet Mandarin and grapefruit fragranced shower creme.

- Yankee Candle "The Perfect Tree" in a cute little glass tealight holder.

- Kiss makeup Rose gold nail stickers.

- Ilchester cheeses limited edition Gingerbread cheese.

- T2 Gorgeous Christmas Breakfast tea, which I did in fact have with the Christmas breakfast. It tasted like liquid Parkin!  For those not familiar with Yorkshire provender, Parkin is a type of dark, sticky, spiced loaf cake, similar to gingerbread, but with a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg in there too.

- Homespun Wonders merino sock yarn in one of my favourite colourways from the entire advent calendar, which is a colour that could be called pink, with red speckles, but to me it's more like a pale red, with dark red speckles, if that even makes sense?

Homespun Wonders Advent Calendar

This is all of the yarns from my Homespun Wonders 2018 advent calendar.  A mix of BFL, merino, and sparkly sock yarns, in every colour of the rainbow. Then a full skein in a beautiful mix of icy shades for Christmas day, complete with a stitch marker in the shape of winter mittens.

The yarns in this advent calendar make it worth the price on their own, but on top of these, it also came with a selection of Christmas themed treats and trinkets.  I honestly can't understand how they do it, but Katie and Heather just make the best yarn boxes in the world!

The Regulars

WIPs

I have no finished objects from the last month.  I had hoped to finish the socks that I've been knitting, but instead I became so addicted to knitting my mitred squares cushion covers, that the other projects I brought up north with me have hardly been touched.

I have managed to get a little bit of work done on my socks.  Mostly because they're the most portable project that I brought with me, so they've been taken to the coffee shop a few times, and out for Christmas dinner.  From those few outings, I've managed to finish the first sock, and make a start on the second.  I'll have it finished in the next week or so, mostly because I've got a couple of train journeys during the next week!

These socks are actually for me.  They're still knit according to my standard sock pattern, but adapted for my weird feet, rather than someone elses.  The yarn is Regia  Design Line by Anne & Carlos, in the colourway 03653.  I'm a little concerned at how little seems to be left, as this is only a 50g ball, so I might be playing a bit of yarn chicken by the end, but I don't really mind if I have one odd toe.

Not knitting, I know, but it's still a work in progress!  I got dad some new carving tools, and some Bass Wood for his Christmas present.  Bass Wood is what all of the american whittlers seem to use for their carving.  I think they call it Lime wood over here, but just to be sure, I got some of the american stuff.  Dad wanted us to both have a try at following one of the carving videos by one of his favourite YouTubers - Doug Outside.  So on Boxing day we spread out a giant drop cloth across the living room, and settled down with wood, and whittling knives, and YouTube on the tv.  I got this far before I managed to cut myself with my very sharp knife.  I took that as a sign that it was time to take a break.  I'll pick him back up again when I back next week, and I'll try to give him a face.

On the left of this photo is an entire side of a mitred squares cushion cover, and on the right is the first few rows of the other side.  I'm going to give both sides a plain black border before I sew them together and stuff a cushion in them.

As you can see, I took the advice of the people who responded on facebook to my last advent post, and I gave up trying to add all of my advent yarns in order, and ensured a more even distribution of colours.

The yarns for this are a mix of sock yarn mini-skeins by several different indie hand dyers - Yorkshire Dales Yarns, Ring-a-rosie, Mothy and the Squid, Alls Wool that Ends Wool, and Hey Jay.  The pattern is based on the Mitred Squares Blanket by LuAnn Krug.

I have also added a few squares to my blanket, but I think I'll save photos of that until I've added enough for it to be worth showing.

Stash Acquisition

In the run up to Christmas, Mothy and The Squid had a handful of these extra special skeins of "Christmas Hawk Moth" available.  The colourway is a special one, based on the "Winter Hawk Moth" colourway, but darker, and the yarn base is special too, as it's a high lurex content yarn, meaning that it's especially sparkly!  I could have resisted any normal skein being about to disappear, but not this one!  And having gone to the site to buy this, I decided to also add this really bright mini-skein in "That's enough crazy", and the new mini tote bag too.

As I was knitting up my mitred squares cushion cover, and blanket, I started to realise that I had a definite over-representation of the colour green.  So I decided to have a Christmas Eve visit to Ring-a-rosie's to pick up a few more mini-skeins, and I tried really hard to not pick up too much more green!  A couple managed to slip in there, but one of those is part of a bundle, so it doesn't count.  Mostly I managed to get reds, blues, and purples though.

This doesn't really count as stash acquisition, but I've put it here to demonstrate what I mean about the colours of my mini-skeins.  I sorted them all into a rough chromatic order, based on the most prevalent colour in each skein, as some are a mix of colours.  As you can see, I have only 1 row of reds, and 1 row of purples, even though these are my 2 favourite colours, but I have 4 rows of greens, and 2 of blues!

Plans for 2019

I'm sort of calling some of these plans "resolutions", but I don't really like that word.  It insinuates too much in the way of pressure, and simply existing in the modern world is pressure enough, without adding more for yourself!  So let's call them plans, aims, or goals instead.  If I don't achieve them all, that's ok, as long as I try my best.

* Sort out my budget, and determine how much I actually have "spare" that can be spent on yarn, instead of buying on impulse because I want to cheer myself up, and then having my actual bills fail, costing me interest and admin fees from my bank.

* Do my physio every day that I'm supposed to, instead of one time in 3, then maybe my wrists won't be in agony after knitting  half a dozen rows.

* Get back to working on reducing my number of WIPs and UFOs, with the aim of being in single figures by next new year.  After making excellent progress in 2017 towards this goal, I have not managed so well this year.  At least I haven't significantly increased my number of WIPs either!

* Do more spinning!  Including trying to make it to more of the Travelling Spinners meet ups.

* Knit more garments.  Actually use some of those sweater quantities that have been waiting to become sweaters for years!

There are a couple of others too, but they have little or no influence on my knitting, so I'm not going to list them here.

Penguins!

Is this cheating?  This is my Christmas card, hand made by my sister, because she's both lovely, and clever like that :)  If you look closely, you can even see that the background of the card is a knitted cables pattern1

This might be cheating too.  This was our little pile of Christmas presents, all wrapped up in penguiny goodness :)

This is definitely not cheating!  These were my Christmas presents this year from Stephen, and my sister.  Also, my Christmas day skein from my advent calendar is in there.

From left to right we have:  Clever wooden jewellery box from Stephen.  Penguin mug, penguin stress toy, penguin bath fizzer, Very Large gin glass, and penguin ice mould, chocolate and caramel penguins, and penguin socks in a tree decoration, all from my sister!!!  She claimed that these were "Just silly little things, so that you've got something to open on Christmas day." but I think that she spent more than she should have on me!  None-the-less, I'm very, very grateful, and I love them!

Our sister-from-another-mister, Gemma, is a scout leader, and when she was ordering badges for her troupe, she spotted this, and decided to order one for me.  I was never a Scout, I think I was too old to be one by the time feminism reached the stage that girls were allowed to join, so I was a Girl Guide instead.  I have no idea what happened to my old camp blanket, but I'm sure I can find somewhere to sew this :)

I did a bit of research to determine what this badge signified, and found that it was part of last years Christmas Appeal.  Each year the Scouts organise a Christmas Appeal to help fund extra special activities that some of their members might not be able to afford without help, and any Scout who adds a donation is eligible for that years appeal badge.  This year the Appeal Badge features Doris the Donkey, and the focus of the appeal is providing space and supervision, so that more children can benefit from the activities that being a Scout provides.

That is all for 2018 my dears!  I am now off to put fuel in the car, then drive back to Sheffield.  If we're lucky, we might even make it there in time, and with enough energy, to attend one of the parties that our various friends are hosting!

I wish you all a very happy New Year, and I hope that wonderful things happen for you in 2019!

Advent Adventure 2018, Days 19 & 20

Hello again my dears, I hope that you're all well.

Today I have had the most marvellously chilled out pyjama day.  Just watching tv, and chatting with dad, and adding a few more squares to both my Mitred Squares Blanket, and a matching cushion cover.  We may have also cracked open the booze (Mmmm!  Bloom Limited Edition Jasmine and Rose gin!) and cut into the little Christmas cake that my sister and her husband made for dad.

Anyway, on with the contents of my advent calendars:

December 19th

- Lindt chocolate square.

- Bayliss & Harding scented candle.  I still can't identify what this one is, but it's light and subtle.

- Yankee Candle "Sparkling Cinnamon"

- Kiss makeup coral nail polish.

- Ilchester cheeses Cheddar cheese.

- T2 Gorgeous Geisha green tea.  This was lovely!  I brewed this one up immediately after taking the photo, and it's the best green tea without anything else added to it that I've ever tasted.

- Homespun Wonders merino sock yarn in this gorgeous speckly, fiery yellow and orange colourway.

December 20th

- Lindt mini Lindor.

- Bayliss & Harding Midnight Fig and Pomegranate fragranced soap.

- Yankee Candle "Winter Glow"

- Kiss makeup matte beige eyeshadow. This is literally my perfect transition shade, so I'm really pleased with it!

- Ilchester cheeses Applewood cheese.

- T2 New York Breakfast.  I haven't had the chance to try this one yet, as I spent the entire morning in bed!  I think most of the black teas that I get in the next few days will end up being saved until I get back home, and into something resembling a normal routine again.

- Homespun Wonders merino sock yarn in a sort of slightly peachy yellow.  It doesn't really show up very well in the photo, but there are little hints of a sort of apricot colour in this mini-skein.

I have a dilemma now that I'd appreciate any opinions on, and that is that I've had a fair few yellow shades out of the advent calendar in the last few days, and due to the way that I've chosen to arrange the squares on the cushion cover that I'm currently working on, this presents me with a bit of a problem.

I've been working all of the advent yarns in the order that they come out of the calendar, inter-spaced with squares knit from other random hand dyed mini-skeins that I have, with the exception of days 13 and 14, as this pattern would have placed day 13 right next to day 10, and although day 10 was a variegated blue, the deepest shade in the mix was very similar to the colour of day 13's yarn,  In that case I simply swapped those 2 days around, and the problem was solved, however, that isn't going to work this time:

Even if I swap these over, I'm still putting yellow right next to yellow.  So, the question is:  Do I just suck it up for the sake of keeping a record of the order these yarns came out of the calendar, and have 2 pairs of yellow squares in the middle of the finished cushion cover, or, do I mess with the order, and see what colours come out over the next few days, or, do I abandon the alternate squares plan altogether, and finish this row of squares with contrasting colours from my existing collection of mini-skeins?

Let me know what you think!

Short and sweet today, that's all I've got to show you, so I'll be back again in a day or so.

Night night my dears.

Advent Adventure 2018 - Days 11 - 18

Hello my dears!  No, I have not disappeared, I've just been super busy, and super run down, so basically entirely lacking in either time or energy for making of blog posts.

It's already pretty late today, but I daren't leave it any longer before I do an update!

So let's dive right in!

December 11th

- Lindt mini Lindor.

- Bayliss & Harding I can't remember the fragrance of this soap, but it's definitely soap.

- Yankee Candle "Winter Glow"

- Kiss makeup toe separators.

- Ilchester cheeses Jarlsberg cheese.

- T2 Chai tea.  I'm afraid I haven't got around to trying this one yet, because it's much more effort to make chai than it is to make normal tea, as it involves heating milk, rather than just boiling a kettle.

- Homespun Wonders sparkle sock yarn in my favourite colourway yet, which is a bright coral red.

December 12th

- Lindt mini Lindor.

- Bayliss & Harding I can't remember the fragrance of this bath fizzer, but it's definitely a bath fizzer.

- Yankee Candle "Sparkling cinnamon"

- Kiss makeup eyeshadow sponge.  I won't use this for eyeshadow though, I've got lots of lovely brushes for doing that with a bit more refinement than can be achieved with a sponge.  I will however use the sponge for applying nail pigments, or buffing in chrome finish nail powders.

- Ilchester cheeses Applewood cheese.

- T2 Strawberry Sensation tea, which does unfortunately suffer a little from the Fruit Tea Problem, that being it smells amazing, but the flavour is comparatively disappointing.  However, I do think that this particular tea would be much nicer as an iced tea in the summer.

- Homespun Wonders BFL sock yarn in this sweet pink colour.

I need to show you something else about today's advent calendars.  Every day when I open the cheese calendar, there's a "cheesey joke", or a cheese related fact on the back of the cardboard door.  Similarly, the T2 advent calendar has tea related facts, or vouchers to use in T2.  The message on the back of this day's door especially appealed to me, so I thought I'd share it with you:

December 13th

- Lindt mini Lindor.

- Bayliss & Harding scented candle, this one isn't as fabulous as the red one, but it is pretty good.  It has a citrusy smell.

- Yankee Candle "Snowflake cookie"

- Kiss makeup pink nail polish.

- Ilchester cheeses Edam cheese.

- T2 French Earl Grey tea.  Earl Grey is my regular brew, so I already own a whole tin of this, and it is indeed very nice, if you like Earl Grey anyway!

- Homespun Wonders merino sock yarn in a nice solid sky blue colour.  This is a very similar shade to the primary shade in the tonal blue yarn that was in the advent calendar a few days ago.

December 14th

- Lindt chocolate square.

- Bayliss & Harding soap, which I again can't remember the fragrance of, which is even more annoying this time, because I feel I should remember which fragrance goes with which colour, and I don't even have the excuse that I had with the white soap, that there are 2 different fragrances that are both white.

- Yankee Candle "The Perfect Tree"

- Kiss makeup emery board (nail file).

- Ilchester cheeses Red Leicester cheese.

- T2 Melbourne Breakfast tea.  This is another one that I haven't had a chance to try yet.  Mostly because I only drink black teas early in the day, but I haven't actually been functional enough to drink anything early on any day for a bit.

- Homespun Wonders BFL sock yarn in a gorgeous cool grey colour.

December 15th

- Lindt chocolate square.

- Bayliss & Harding I can't remember the fragrance of this bath fizzer either.  I'm so sorry about the shocking memory, and not having actually recorded all of this information like I should have.  This is what happens when I'm having a physical flop, and/or a mental crash.  I end up with Brain Fog, that just makes everything 10 times as difficult as it ought to be.

- Yankee Candle "Spiced white cocoa"

- Kiss makeup red lip liner pencil.  Sadly, getting this out of the calendar involved jamming the point against the plastic form that everything inside the calendar is held in, so the tip is all broken, and I need to find my pencil sharpener.

- Ilchester cheeses Jarlsberg cheese.

- T2 Sleep Tight tea.  I love sleepy teas, and I like to drink one most evenings, so I already own some of this, and I love it.  I've always loved floral flavours, and this is a blend of the sort of flowers associated with relaxation, like lavendar.

- Homespun Wonders sparkle sock yarn in this stunning variegated pinky purple and white.  Unusually, this photo wasn't taken with flash.  Despite the fact that it was ridiculously cold on the 15th, it was quite bright and sunny early on.  It did not remain so!

December 16th

- Lindt mini Lindor.

- Bayliss & Harding scented candle, another of the citrusy ones.

- Yankee Candle "Spiced white cocoa"

- Kiss makeup mascara.

- Ilchester cheeses Applewood cheese.

- T2 Lemongrass & Ginger tea.  I love this tea so much!  I already own a box of it, but it's one that I'm drinking a lot of at this time of year, because it's very warming.  I like to add a spoonful of honey to it too.

- Homespun Wonders Merino sock in this pretty muted yellow colour.  I've been putting these photos up on my instagram, and a few people have commented on how often the tea and the yarn seem to match!  It's pure coincidence, I promise!

December 17th

- Lindt mini Lindor.

- Bayliss & Harding Jojoba, silk, and almond fragranced soap.  I still have this one next to me, as I've opened the door it was behind since arriving at my dad's.  This is why I know what the fragrance is.

- Yankee Candle "Sparkling Cinnamon"

- Kiss makeup lip balm.

- Ilchester cheeses Jarlsberg cheese.

- T2 Creme Brulee tea.  Another that I've not had a chance to try yet, although I'm quite looking forward to finding out what it's like.

- Homespun Wonders merino sock yarn in bright sunshine yellow.

December 18th

- Lindt mini Lindor.

- Bayliss & Harding Prosecco Fizz fragranced bath fizzer.

- Yankee Candle "Macaron Treats"

- Kiss makeup orange sticks.  For those who aren't familiar with the strange world of beauty, these sticks are not for poking oranges with.  They are in fact for tending to the appearance of finger nails, by pushing back cuticles, cleaning under the nail, and removing any remnabts of nail polish that are in awkward creases or crevices.

- Ilchester cheeses Edam cheese.

- T2 Just Chamomile tea.  Yep, it's just chamomile, but very nice chamomile.

- Homespun Wonders merino sock yarn in a light beige/brown colour.  This is entirely not a colour that I would choose for myself, so it's going to make an excellent contrast in my mitred square blanket.

Phew!  Finally up to date!
I'm not done though!  There are penguins!

Penguins!

Stephen and I were doing some grocery shopping, and there were penguin Christmas decorations.  So we got one, and I hung him up with some other penguin ornaments on our fireplace.

I was visiting my sister, and popped into the supermarket nearest to her where I found something shocking, but wonderful.  For some entirely unfathomable reason, despite the fact that at this point there was still a full 10 days to go until Christmas day, many of the items on the "Seasonal" aisle had been reduced to clear!  So I got these socks.  They're not very good at keeping my toes warm, so I will have to stick to my hand knit socks on very cold days, but these are ok for days when the temperature is above zero.

This cuddly penguin was also in the reduced to clear section.  I'd just been through a massive stress involving going to the pharmacist to pick up my medications for over Christmas, only to find that there is a national shortage of my primary pain medication, so they're entirely unable to fulfil that item for me.  They suggested that I try using over the counter ibuprofen as an alternative to the maximum prescribable dose of a prescription only medication.  Aaaarrrghhhh!!!
So I bought this guy purely for comfort reasons.

The tired and the stressed have been a big theme through all of this week, which is why I also have this little chap.  Well, that and the fact that Stephen is very lovely.  We'd had a big stress while packing to visit our parents, involving his misplacing his medication, and us spending an hour turning the house upside down, only to find that he'd put his book down on top of them.  This meant that I was mentally fraught, and physically wrecked by the time we set off, plus we were an hour and a half later setting off than we'd intended, the bright sunshine of earlier that day had turned into freezing rain, and snow was forecast for areas that we'd be driving through later.  We stopped for fuel before getting onto the motorway, and Stephen came out from paying for that fuel with this guy to cheer me up :)  Isn't he lovely?  By that I mean both Stephen and the penguin!  This penguin is now living on the dashboard of our car, tucked right into the corner under the English Heritage membership sticker, so he doesn't interfere with visibility while driving.

When I'm stressed, and overwrought, and can't sleep, I have a terrible habit of idly browsing the internet and accidentally buying stuff at 3am, while completely insensible with fatigue.  Often what I buy at these times is yarn.  On Saturday night I couldn't sleep despite all the stress of driving up the motorway through increasingly sleety, icy rain, until eventually it was actually snow, and we were driving through a layer of slippery slushy ice, and some other drivers were so scared by this that they were doing 30mph on the motorway, and other gave zero fucks, and were still doing over 80mph, and there were a number of "Is that blue flashing lights ahead? It is!  Uhm, is that car facing backwards?" moments.  When I checked my phone on Sunday morning, there were a number of order confirmations from Amazon in my emails.

It turns out that among other things, I'd ordered these.  In case you can't see properly in the photo, the purple book is specially made for designing knitting patterns, and has graph paper inside that is skewed to represent the size of stitches, so that you can create designs that should knit up the correct shape.  If you use ordinary squared paper, then a design that looks fine on paper, will be strangely elongated when knit up.  And yeah, the other is just an ordinary notebook with a penguin on it.

Christmas with Dad

This is what the majority of the next 2 weeks will look like for me.  Well, with some minor differences, as I took this photo after dad had gone to bed, while I was catching up on the podcasts that I watch.  If dad is in the room with me, then usually we'll be watching YouTube videos about camping, carving, and/or fishing, or we'll be watching Stargate SG1.

That is my bed for the next couple of weeks.  Sometimes we fold it away during the day, but if we're not doing anything that day that means it will get in the way, then we leave it out.  Yes, my pillow is covered in purple hair dye.

I'm hoping that after tomorrow (err... later today!) which is the day I've assigned for doing all of dad's adulting, we'll be able to just chill.  I've managed to get up to date with my podcasts, but I'm still several days behind on knitting my advent yarns into my blanket and cushion cover, so I could do with some solid knitting time.

First though, I could do with some more sleep (I slept for about 3 hours this afternoon), so I'm off to bed.

Night night my dears.
